Gamenight: Sabres lead Edmonton 4-0 in second period

January 23, 2018

Three second period goals have given the Sabres a 4-0 lead over the Edmonton Oilers in the second period. Check back throughout the game for updates.

The Oilers had the first chance on the power play when Jake McCabe was called for holding. Ryan Strome had the best chance on the man advantage for Edmonton with a shot in the slot. However, Robin Lehner was up to the task to make the save and move the puck out of harms way thanks to Justin Falk. Lehner returned to the crease for the Sabres after Chad Johnson got the start the night prior in Calgary.

Rasmus Ristolainen and Sam Reinhart made Buffalo's first power play of the night count just minutes later. Ristolainen took a shot from the point that hit Reinhart who was making his way to the top of the crease to beat Cam Talbot. The goal was Reinhart's ninth of the season and was assisted by Ristolainen and Jack Eichel. Adam Larsson was in the penalty box thanks to a holding minor when the goal was scored.

The assist extended Eichel's point streak to seven games. He has recorded eleven points (4G, 7A) over that stretch as well, including the game-winning goal in overtime against the Flames on Monday.

Buffalo outshot Edmonton 15-8 overall in the opening twenty minutes, with Lehner stopping all eight chances faced. Cam Talbot stopped 14 of the 15 Sabres' shots on goal.

It took the blue and gold just seventeen seconds to get their second goal of the night. Ryan O'Reilly crashed to the front of the net and chipped home a rebound chance into the top of the net making it 2-0 Sabres. The goal was O'Reilly's twelfth of the season, with Scott Wilson and Reinhart being credited with the assists.

Nearly seven minutes later the lead ballooned to three goals for Buffalo thanks to a fortunate bounce on a 2-on-1 chance. Kyle Okposo's pass went off of Zemgus Girgensons' and found its way into the net. Eichel helped on the play as well, and was given an assist along with Okposo. The score was the fourth of the season for Girgensons.

Eichel's third point of the night came on the power play, and extended the Buffalo lead to 4-0. The forward's twentieth goal of the season came from the blue line on a wrist shot that chased Talbot from the game. Reinhart provided a screen in front of the net as well. Ristolainen and Okposo assisted on the special team's score.
