Gameday: O'Reilly scores, 1-1 Sabres and Sharks in second period

October 28, 2017

First Period

18:38 - Buffalo is coming out with an up tempo pace to the game, and it nearly results in the game's first goal. Evander Kane was setup by the birthday boy Jack Eichel. Aaron Dell made the save coming across his crease for San Jose.

15:45 - Sam Reinhart went to the box for tripping, but it was the Sabres who had the better scoring chances for the most part during the last two minutes. Marc-Edouard Vlasic nearly made it 1-0 San Jose but could not tap the puck into an open net. Besides that chance, it was a sound defensive segment for Buffalo.

10:48 - SHARKS GOAL. Joonas Donskoi could not have been in any better position, coming out of the penalty box as the puck went past Matt Tennyson's stick and into the neutral zone. The forward went in one-on-one with Robin Lehner and picked the far corner. A nice shot makes gives San Jose the lead. 1-0 SJ.

7:23 - The Sabres go back to the power play, let's hope the second go 'round is better than the first. Special teams just have seemed all out of whack this season. It can be hard to be as good as Buffalo was last year, but the effort should be better. The passing needs to be better as well.

4:55 - No goals for the blue and gold on their latest man advantage. I thought they moved the puck better and with more of a vision, but still lacked the urgency that you would like to see. There is a difference between being calm with the puck and not looking like there is any life on the man advantage. It is somewhat of a fine line, but the Sabres have a long way to go.

2:48 - Jack Eichel thought he had the game's tying goal on a one-time rebound chance. However, a challenge by Peter DeBoer and the Sharks for goaltender interference and it was determined that Reinhart interfered with Dell in the goalie's crease. Buffalo still trails by a goal.

Second Period

17:05 - SABRES GOAL. The fourth time is the charm for Buffalo, as Ryan O'Reilly is able to glide in from the slot and bury the puck in the far corner of the net, top corner, making no doubt for his fourth goal of the year. A good start for Buffalo this period as one of their leaders, one of the alternate captains is the one who leads the charge, so to speak. 1-1 tie.

11:23 - There is a helthy dialogue going on in my Twitter feed right now (@PatWGR) Many do not believe that Dell made an effort to get up in his crease and play Eichel's shot. The rule is that Reinhart cannot impede Dell's progress to play the puck, I feel that he did. Feel free to join in the conversation. The more the merrier.

7:42 - Victor Antipin was in the penalty box for interference, but his teammates bailed him out on the PK. Evander Kane actually had the best scoring chance during those two minutes, sending a shot off of Dell's shoulder. Nice recivery by Buffalo to maybe flip the momentum.
