From the Locker Room: Sabres-Red Wings

October 24, 2017

Benoit Pouliot scored on a wraparound chance from behind the net midway through the second period; not only did Pouliot stuff home his second goal as a Sabre, but also Victor Antipin's first NHL point, and, most importantly, a Buffalo victory, as the Sabres emerged victorious 1-0 over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday Night. Hear what head coach Phil Housley had to say about the team's third win on 2017-18, along with Robin Lehner and Pouliot below.

Robin Lehner

On team making in-game adjustments: "I think we played a good game. I think we played the right way, and we've got to keep learning what makes us successful. I think the first 10 minutes of the game, we went back and played like we did before... started forcing pucks up the middle, and they kept turning around. But then after the middle mark of the first period, we started getting it deep, started getting zone time, and started getting pressure."

On team's composure in tight contest: "It means we followed the gameplan. As I said from day one, I think we have a great gameplan, we just have to do it. We got it deep, we flipped pucks out when we were in doubt, didn't force plays. Looking at the third period, we were just flipping it out, putting it in, kept them going 200 feet back getting it, and we had numbers back home."

On team's "defense first" mentality vs DET: "It worked out very well, [Lehner] was a very big part of it, obviously. We played smart, a much better game, I think, throughout the 60 minutes... tried to keep them away from the net, and that's what we did. So, it was good."

On eventual game-winning goal in second period: "I was trying to wrap it around, I didn't really know where the goalie was. I tried to do it as quick as possible, and lucky for us, it went in, so it's good."

On team's confidence after two consecutive victories: "It's huge. In Boston, the first and second periods weren't our best, but we battled back and we played the way we were supposed to play and we won the game.. tonight we did that right off the bat... we took responsibility, we played hard, we back-checked; we played the way we wanted to play and it showed in the result."

On team's defensive job against a loaded Detroit roster: "They've got a lot of firepower over there, they're pretty deep in their lineup. It was important that our forwards on the forecheck were reloading because their [defenders] like to get involved in the play... I thought we did a terrific job in zone one in front of our net, and when we needed a save, Robin delivered it for us. It was a really good job, the way we played defensively."

On team's ability to hold a one goal lead for over half of the game: "I think it's a good example of when you play the right way, you're not always going to get what you want. You're going to have to take what's given, and sometimes you're going to have to defend. We all want to play offense, we all like playing in the offensive zone, but when it's your shift to come back and play solid defense, and it requires that, we have to do it. Tonight was a good example of it. You look at our first period; it wasn't really where we wanted it to be... I think it was 9-2 in shots, but they fought through that. Then we got the period back, and I think that really set us up for the second."
