Local Stores Adding Sneeze Guards as Protection

March 27, 2020

Both Wegmans Food Markets and Tops Friendly Markets have begun adding more layers of protection between their workers and customers as the COVID-19 pandemic continues in the area.

If you’ve been to Wegmans lately, you may have noticed clear acrylic partitions, also known as sneeze guards, at the front-end registers and pharmacies. The protective screen will help block cashiers and customers from airborne droplets from a sneeze or cough from the other side.

The first Wegmans location to receive the partitions was the Chili store with all others being rolled out in the coming weeks.

Tops is also starting to add shields to many of their front-end registers. If sneeze guards can’t be installed due to logistical limitations, associates will be provided with protective face shields, which will also be used in the pharmacy and at the customer service desk.

They are also providing workers with gloves, providing hand-sanitizing stations around their stores and are offering “comfort zone” areas at registers to allow for social distancing. Each store also has a designated worker to oversee sanitizing of all frequently touched surfaces.

Walmart will also be installing acrylic barriers around its stores over the next couple of weeks in an effort to help slow the spread of COVID-19.
