JOHN MELLENCAMP is the latest Rocker to claim that Rock & Roll, as we know it, is fading...and it's a sentiment that is (increasingly) shared by other heritage Rock & Rollers. According to Mr. Mellencamp, in an interview published in Sound and Vision, "music simply doesn’t hold the all-consuming power it did for the kids who made rock ‘n’ roll such a powerful cultural phenomenon." The Midwestern Singer/Songwriter pointed out that Rock and Roll as a genre was just another form of music that enjoyed it's time at the top of the charts, much like Big Band music did in the 1940's and 50's. Contributing to it's fading popularity, Mellencamp cites the numerous forms of entertainment and music listening available to muisc fans today, waaaay more than there used to be when people sought out their favorite tunes. He went on to say, “I’m not saying there aren’t great songwriters out there. There are. But we’re never going to experience them the way we able to experience them in the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. We’re not set up for that anymore.”
