When JIMI HENDRIX disbanded the Jimi Hendrix Experience in early 1969, the legendary guitarist wasted no time in putting together a new vehicle for his music...that new group was Band of Gypsys, and included drummer Buddy Miles, and bassist Billy Cox whom Hendrix had known from his time in the Army. Initially, Hendrix formed an interim band to play at Woodstock, where the group was billed as 'Gypsy Sun and Rainbows,' and added a rhythm guitarist and 2 conga players to the mix. After Woodstock, Band of Gypsys reverted to just the trio, and a mere 4 months later on the eve of the new year (and new decade), the group played 4 shows at New York's fabled Fillmore East. These performances featured Hendrix veering away from his previous psychedelic approach and concentrating more on a 'hybrid' sound, incorporating hard rock and jamming, as well as elements of Funk and Jazz. The original issue of Band of Gypsys was the only recording issued from the trio, a single album with performances culled from the January 1st show. The album was also the last official Hendrix album released before his death. In 1999, more previously unreleased material was included in the expanded 30th Anniversary reissue, 'Live at the Fillmore East.'  Fast forward to the present, and the 50th anniversary of these incredible performances will be observed with the release of all 4 complete shows (2 each night-12/31-69 & 1/1/70) by Band of Gypsys on a new box set called, 'Songs for Groovy Children: The Fillmore East Concerts.'  The new set (5 CDs/8 LPs), which will be released on Nov. 22 presents all four shows, unedited, and given a new mix by Hendrix's engineer Eddie Kramer. They're packaged with a book featuring contains liner notes by Billy Cox and author Nelson George, as well as photos from the Fillmore East shows. Pre-orders for 'Songs for Groovy Children: The Fillmore East Concerts' can be made HERE. Watch the trailer for the new set below and check out the complete set lists too! Rock ON!
