Welcome to NHL Trade Deadline Day

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) - My favorite day of the year is here, it’s NHL Trade Deadline Day! Teams can make deals right up until 3 p.m. with some deals announced afterwards because of the volume of trades that come in at the last minute.

I think we can say with quite a bit of certainty that Evander Kane will be traded, but the others are cloudier.

Unrestricted free agents that are currently on expiring contracts are Kane, Benoit Pouliot, Josh Gorges, Justin Falk, Jordan Nolan, Chad Johnson and Casey Nelson.

Restricted free agents on expiring contracts are Robin Lehner, Victor Antipin, Sam Reinhart, Nick Baptiste and Scott Wilson.

Kyle Okposo can't be traded because of his contract but that doesn't mean he's not interest. Okposo said, "I'm a hockey nerd so I'll be looking at stuff pretty much most of the day. It's an exciting day for the league with teams jockeying for position but at the same time, it's tough to see friends go, tough to see teammates go, but it's part of the business."

The Sabres would like to add draft picks for this June’s draft. They have picks in every round except the third. They have two fourth round picks with the extra coming from Minnesota in the Marco Scandella trade. The Sabres lost the third round pick in the same deal.

When I look around the NHL, many of the names have already been traded. Rick Nash played his first game for Boston against the Sabres on Sunday and that may now set the market for Jason Botterill and Kane.

Two high quality defensemen are up for grabs. Ottawa is taking offers for Erik Karlsson while the Rangers are looking to move Ryan McDonagh.

Montreal captain Max Pacioretty could be had for the right offer and many think the Canadiens would be willing to part with Alex Galchenyuk if the right offer came along.

After that, it’s pretty slim pickings. Some of those names include Thomas Vanek Van., Mike Green Det. and Patrick Maroon Edm.

Mike Hoffman from Ottawa is an intriguing name that has come up. I don’t think I’d be willing to give him up, even though the Senators are looking to rebuild.

Trade deadline days can start off with a few trades, then we usually get that lull from 11:00 until around 1:30 and then it’s usually a sprint to the finish line.

We’ll have it all for you throughout the day starting with Howard Simon and Jeremy White at 6 a.m. I’ll be live all day long from the arena bringing you and updates and interviews.
