The Sabres wrap up the preseason against the Islanders

September 29, 2017

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) - The Sabres get their final tune-up for the season tonight in the arena against the Islanders. Since there will be six days before the season opener, Robin Lehner will get the call in goal. Phil Housley said, “Obviously we want to win, we’ve got a week to think about our next game for a home opener, so we want to come out and put forth a good effort.”

Sitting this one out will be Nick Deslauriers, Benoit Pouliot, Justin Bailey, Taylor Fedun, Matt Tennyson, Cody Goloubef and Marco Scandella.

Scandella is going to go the whole preseason without playing a game. Phil Housley said, “We’d like to get him in the game, but we’re just being cautious with it. He’s made great strides and great improvement every day. We don’t want to put him into action too early where he might have a setback, so could he have played tonight? Maybe, I think just to err on caution, we’re going to hold him out.”

Sam Reinhart has spent all of training camp playing center and has struggled with it. Center was the position that got Reinhart drafted second overall, but in the NHL, he’s mostly played right wing. Housley said the position change has had some bumps, “In this league anytime you can be strong down the middle, it really helps your team. Everybody gets the right seat on the bus, so we’ve been trying Sam in every game to give him some familiarity and get comfortable with it and it’s been a work in progress.”

“He’s done a really good job of listening and trying to correct the things that he needs to correct, but if we can get that third and fourth line and get some secondary scoring, which I think Sam can provide, it will really help our team.”

Reinhart remains on the number one power play which has gone 0-for-18 in the preseason. He has no points in the three games he’s played.
