Sabres look to break their losing streak in Anaheim

October 15, 2017

Anaheim, CA (WGR 550) - The Sabres come into Anaheim winless in their first five games while the Ducks are 2-2-1. Buffalo is playing the third game of a four game road trip which has seen a 3-2 loss in San Jose and a 4-2 defeat in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Despite playing their best games against the Kings, Ryan O’Reilly and Sam Reinhart have combined for one point this season.

The Sabres were one of the last two teams to give up a power play goal, but in the last two games, they’ve given up four power play goals on six attempts. Rasmus Ristolainen was on the ice for all three of the Kings goals with the extra attacker. He allowed Dustin Brown to just stand around the crease to score the first one.

Buffalo has gone from number one in the NHL on the PK to number 23 killing just 76.5 percent.

The power play is also 23rd going 2-of-19 which is just over 10 percent..

Players that Jason Botterill brought in to fill out the roster have not done the job yet at all, so Justin Bailey has been summoned to see if he can get it going.

Kyle Okposo missed Saturday’s game due to illness. It’s not known if he’ll be ready for the Ducks. I’ll be very interested to see if Benoit Pouliot is in the lineup after turning away from a shot that turned into the game winning goal for Los Angeles. All Phil Housley would say after the game is they have to do a better job of getting into the shot lane.

Jack Eichel and Evander Kane have seven points in the team’s five games while Jason Pominville has six.

Zemgus Girgensons has three points in his last two games playing with Eichel and Pominville. By the end of the Kings game, he was with O’Reilly and Matt Moulson.

Injuries have kept Ryan Getzlaf out of three of the Ducks five games.

Andrew Cogliano has been Anaheim leading scorer with six points in five games.

With Ryan Miller injured, John Gibson has played in every game for the Ducks. He’s 2-1-1 with a 2.80 goals against and .923 save percentage.

Anaheim probably can’t wait to face the Sabres penalty killing at they’re 0-for-17 with the extra man.

The Sabres did not have a morning skate so I’ll be looking to get Phil Housley, Rasmus Ristolainen and Justin Bailey for Brian Koziol’s pregame which gets underway at 9:00.
