The Sabres head out west to play Calgary

January 22, 2018

(WGR 550) - The Buffalo Sabres are visiting another arena that they just can’t seem to win in. Buffalo has lost nine of its last 10 games in Calgary.

Overall, the Sabres have just one win in eight games. That includes giving up seven goals at home twice in three games to Winnipeg and Dallas. Sandwiched in there was a 3-1 victory over Columbus.

The Sabres have power play goals in four straight games in which they have had power play chances. The interesting thing is the game they won, they did not get an opportunity on the PP.

Robin Lehner has been not been good lately, but neither have his teammates. Lehner has been pulled in three of his last five starts and has one win in eight games.

Lehner takes responsibility and said it’s not an individual thing, they need to get it fixed together. “As a team, I don’t turn it around, Ryan O’Reilly is not turning it around and no one is going to turn it around by themselves. That’s not how this works.

“In the NHL today you can not play with one line or one D-pair or have a goalie carry you, you’ve got to do it as a team, all of us. I’ve got to do my job and everyone else has got to do their job.”

Lehner wanted to make sure he’s blaming himself as part of a team, “We’re not playing very good as a team and I’m saying we. We’re all a part of it.

“Effort is a thing we always need to have and that’s the least we need to expect from each other.”

Once Rasmus Ristolainen scored a goal, he’s been adding to the offense. Number 55 has three goals and six assists for nine points in his last nine games.

Jack Eichel has points in five straight games scoring three goals and six assists for nine points.

Kyle Okposo has seven points in four games.

Evander Kane has fallen way off in his play. He has just four goals in 25 games.

The Sabres report that Chad Johnson was the first goaltender off the ice. Calgary is home for Johnson plus, he was a Flame last season. Johnson is 1-8-3 this season with a 3.85 goals against and .878 save percentage.

Calgary lost its last game after winning seven in a row. The Flames have 55 points which is tied with Los Angeles for third in the Pacific Division. Anaheim has 53 points while San Jose has 58.

Mike Smith has helped fix the Flames goaltending problems with a sparkling .925 save percentage in 39 games.

Johnny Gaudreau is 5th in league scoring with 54 points in 46 games. Gaudreau has 13 points in his last eight games.

Sean Monahan is also having a good season with 21 goals and 42 points. Monahan was scoreless in the loss to Winnipeg, but had 10 points in six games before that.

Matt Tkachuk has seven goals and five assists for 12 points his last 13 games.

Join me and Brian Koziol for the pre-game starting at 8:00 when we’ll be joined by Robin Lehner, Jack Eichel, Scott Wilson and Nick Baptiste.
