In one year, Bills have had a dramatic roster overhaul

Talk about turning over a roster.  It’s been clear general manager Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott have been making dramatic changes since taking charge of the Buffalo Bills a year ago, but a look at just how much the roster has flipped in short a shirt time is pretty astonishing.

McDermott was hired in January of 2017, replacing the fired Rex Ryan.  He worked with GM Doug Whaley through the draft.  Whaley and his entire scouting staff were dismissed the day after the draft, on the last day of April.  Nine days later, Beane was hired as his replacement.

Even before Beane was hired, McDermott, essentially in control of the roster, began reshaping the team via free agency and trades.  Beane’s arrival only expedited that process as quite a few players who were acquired by the previous regime were fast-tracked out of Orchard Park.

So, just how much has the roster turned over over the last year and in what areas specifically?  I took a look at last year’s roster on the opening day of the offseason program and compared it to this year’s.  There were 61 players on last year’s roster on the opening day of offseason workouts (April 3).  There are 67 players on this year’s roster, not counting Eric Wood (still on the active roster) or Richie Incognito (reserve/retired).  Here’s what I found, with the current roster shown afterward:

  • Of the 61 players on last year’s roster on the opening day of workouts, 41 are gone and only 20 remain.
  • None of the QBs or CBs are still a member of the Bills.
  • Of the 14 combined RBs and WRs on last year’s roster at this time, only RB LeSean McCoy and WR Andre Holmes are still a part of it.
  • If Wood and/or Incognito did not retire, there would have been 6 of 11 returning offensive linemen, but now only 4 remain.
  • The position group with the most players returning is tight end, with 3 of the 4 from last year.

Here’s the complete breakdown by position:

QB - 0 of 3 remain
RB - 1 of 5
FB - 1 of 2
OL - 4 of 11
TE - 3 of 4
WR - 1 of 9
DE - 2 of 3
DT - 2 of 5
LB - 2 of 5
CB - 0 of 5
S - 2 of 6
K - 1 of 1
P - 1 of 1
LS - 0 of 1
