The NHL offside challenge rule has changed.

September 27, 2017

Pittsburgh, PA (WGR 550) - The NHL has approved a new rule that will stop all the fake offside challenges by coaches. Many would call for a challenge, knowing the play wasn’t offside just to see if they could catch a break.

On Wednesday, the NHL’s Board of Governors approved a change to the rule. There will now be a two-minute penalty assessed for an unsuccessful Coach’s Challenge to an offside infraction leading to goals.

Since you don’t lose a timeout, under the new rule the team does not have to possess a timeout in order to challenge.
