Brandon Montour's time at the IIHF World Championship in Slovakia has come to a premature end.

The Buffalo Sabres defenseman is returning to Buffalo after suffering a lower-body injury while playing with Team Canada during Monday's 6-5 win over the host nation.

“It’s disappointing to see a player like Brandon get hurt at his first world championship,” said Canada's general manager Ron Francis in a team statement. “He is a key player who brought so much to the team, and although he won’t be able to continue, we were impressed with his work ethic on and off the ice. We wish him all the best in his recovery.”

It is unclear as to when or how the 26-year-old exactly suffered the injury, but he left the game during the second period and did not return to action. Montour was held pointless in three games played for the Canadians, while also registering a minus-1.

Canada returns to action on Thursday when the team takes on France in group play.
