From the Locker Room - Sharks 3, Sabres 2

October 13, 2017

The Buffalo Sabres fell to the San Jose Sharks, 3-2, last night to start their four game road trip. Jason Pominville had two goals, while Jack Eichel and Zemgus Girgensons had two assists each. Hear what Pominville, Eichel, Robin Lehner and coach Phil Housley had to say following the 3-2 loss:

Phil Housley -

On the team's effort compared to their last two losses: "You look at the first four games here and two of them you can accept the effort and compete level of the guys. Coming in on the road, we knew the situation San Jose was in, we knew they were going to start fast, which they did. Then we got settled down and into our own game, and it was just unfortunate that we didn't get that third goal. But can't fault the effort, that's something to build off but at the same time, we've got to start turning it around and win some hockey games."

On the improvements defensively after allowing 12 goals in the last two games: "We did a really good job -especially after the first six minutes of the first period- of getting back, supporting each other, coming out as a 5 man unit. As a result of our breakouts, we get 2-on-1s out of it. So, we have to continue to work on that area of our game, but I thought we did a really good job against a really good forechecking team."

On the fact that only Eichel, Pominville and Evander Kane having the only goals on the year so far: "When you're an offensive player and you want to contribute, you feel better about yourself, you feel better about your contribution to the team. I think it just comes down to hard work, we have to work our way out of these things and the guys that aren't scoring have to find a way to work through it."

Jack Eichel -

On the team's rough start to the season: "We've got to just figure a way to be sick of losing, I know I'm sick of losing, there's a lot of guys that are sick of losing. But, there's a difference between playing hard and playing hard and smart. We have to execute our game all the way through the lineup, myself included. We've just got to get sick of losing."

On the team's improved effort from the previous two losses: "We had a 5-on-3, we've got to capitalize on that. We had chances, but it's like I said, it's not enough. We can't really be satisfied at all, we can't be happy with out-shooting them or playing hard. You can't pat yourself on the back because you played hard, we just lost. I think everyone needs to be sick of it, it's getting old. We need to find a way to win hockey games, doesn't matter if we're on the road against a good team, we need to find a way to win the hockey game. All the way through the lineup, we just have to be better."

Jason Pominville -

On the team's improved effort from the past two games: "It's a league of results, so it's frustrating that we're not getting the results that we want. But.. I thought our effort was way better and we have to take that with us, but at the end of the end of the day we didn't get the two points, that's what we play for and that's what we want."

On what will help get this team over the hump for it's first win: "It's all about details. We got caught on a little bit of a change, they get a rush and they put it in the back of our net. First one, PK, every little detail matters. It's going to take a lot of details, a lot of effort, to get out of this but we've got it in us, we've got to regroup and we've got to be ready for Saturday."

Robin Lehner -

On the team's improved effort: "The effort part of the game is an automatic for me. Every team in this league has to have the effort. I think the effort was better, but it comes down to small details. We knew they'd come out hard in this building. It comes down to the details, it comes down to bringing everything together. The first two goals in the first period, I think they got them a little too easy. It's the details of the game, you mix it in with good effort, you'll get good results. You can't have one or the other, we've got to mix it all together."

On the Sabres' offensive pressure: "You're not going to beat goalies if you don't have anyone in front of the net, I think Jones saw every shot today. It's not to beat on anyone, but we have to recognize that as a team."
