From the Locker Room: Sabres-Hurricanes

December 23, 2017

The Sabres trailed right from the start, giving up a goal less than a minute into the game against the Carolina Hurricanes, and could not recover. Three second period Carolina goals erased any threat when Nathan Beaulieu and Zemgus Girgensons tallied for Buffalo.

Go inside the locker room to hear from Johnson, Girgensons, Beaulieu, Eichel, and Housley below:

Chad Johnson

On the type of scoring chances Carolina was able to create: "It was a tough, another tough night, I don't know what to say right now. It's been a tough year all year for me, I don't know what to say to be honest. I don't know, they played really well, I thought we had a good push in the third, and it was just some mistakes and penalties I think gave them a little momentum and they outscored us. I don't know."

On playing from behind all night: "I think we knew, you know Phil said right off the bat that they were going to come out hard in the first five and they did that, and they scored there, right off the bat...within the first two minutes...and yeah, I thought maybe we were on our heels, I don't know, a little bit after that."

Nathan Beaulieu

On the first shift of the game: "It was pretty disappointing, it wasn't good enough. [We] talked before the game, you know, how they were going to come out strong and coming off the back-to-back so, everyone had to be ready off the start. Pretty poor performance by a lot of us, and [it] sucks, we really wanted to play good in front of Johnny [Chad Johnson], he's been solid for us, and really wanted to get him a win for him tonight but it was pretty disappointing, the way to end the first half before Christmas."

On letting Chad Johnson down in goal: "Yeah, he's played great. I mean, we gotta be better for him, [it] doesn't matter whose in net, we gotta put in a good perfomance but, he made all of the saves he needed to make and, you know, unfortunately we didn't come ready to play. It's definitely with the guys, the skaters, it's not him back there, he kept us in it for a lot of the game, it could have been a lot worse than what it was."

Zemgus Girgensons

On all of the odd-man chances Carolina got: "I think it was more about just finishing the checks, I thought their d were jumping around us and I don't know how many odd man rushes they got but it was too many."

On the Christmas break: "We get these three days, I think everyone has kinda just look at themself and figure out what's happening, what can you do better to be better for the team, and take the three days and think about it."

Jack Eichel

On being in New York for a week: "It's good, I'm looking forward to it, you know, hopefully that can, you know, do some good for us here. You know, we gotta find a way to start stringing some wins together, it can't be one, one, one, one, I mean, you know, we knew what to expect tonight...and we still weren't ready to go. It's all a reflection."

Phil Housley

On the game's first goal: "You come into this building, you know, Carolina's been playing some good hockey and you know they were gonna try to come out and they kept it simple early. They got it up and got it in, and really established a forecheck, were physical with us, we did not have a response to that, we didn't have a push back, and it's tough to start, you know, on the road 1-0 on the first shift of the game."
