From the Locker Room: Sabres-Hurricanes

It was another tough pill to swallow on home ice as the Buffalo Sabres lost in overtime to a fellow playoff-hungry team in the Carolina Hurricanes, 6-5.  Jeff Skinner led the Buffalo offense with his 32nd and 33rd goals of the year, including the game-tying goal with less than a minute to go in regulation.  Nonetheless it was Carolina's Teuvo Teravainen also potting his second goal of the night in the extra frame to drop the curtain on the game from KeyBank Center.

The Sabres fall to 1-1-1 through three games on their current seven-game homestand.

Let's head inside the locker room to hear from Jack Eichel, Evan Rodrigues, Skinner, Sam Reinhart and Phil Housley following the loss.

Jack Eichel:

On his effort: "Didn't play well tonight. It's my job to be better. Gotta come to practice tomorrow, get better and be ready for Saturday."

Missing a shot in overtime: "Gotta hit the net there. That one's on me."

Evan Rodrigues:

Why so many defensive breakdowns?: "Not a clue. It's unacceptable and you're not going to win games playing defense like that. We're scoring enough goals to win games, but not defending."

Learning curve over: "We're 50 games in. The learning is over. You have to defend. You're not going to win games when you're not defending."

Jeff Skinner:

Too free in their own zone: "We gave up too much. I think a couple of breakdowns, one of them was 100% on me. We still did a good job of battling back, tying it up and getting a point."

Gotta limit: "You just have to limit breakdowns. They're going to be there. We have to keep correcting mistakes on our game, but also build on the positives."

Sam Reinhart:

Expectations: "We can't expect to win hockey games 6-5, 7-6. We need more. It's frustrating."

Lacking some fight: "We need to take every point we can get, but we don't come into these games looking for just a point. It's a shame. I think we need a lot more fight from a lot of the people in this room from the start."

Phil Housley:

Point at the least: "Credit to our guys for at least fighting for a point. Could be important down the road. Would have liked two points, obviously."

On the recent defensive core issues: "That's Jason's job. We're going to review this game tomorrow and make decisions from there."

Recent defensive meltdowns: "It's something this team is going to learn. We've done a good job this season in trying to limit teams scoring chances. This problem has popped up recently. We'll evaluate and make decisions on personnel."
