Max Domi opened the scoring just over a minute into the game to give the Montreal Canadiens a 1-0 lead over Buffalo in the first period.

Domi scored on a wrist shot after he collected the puck in the offensive zone thanks to a Buffalo turnover. Artturi Lehkonen originally stole the puck away from the blue and gold, and was credited with the lone assist for his efforts.

Two minutes later Rasmus Ristolainen was called for interference, and the first penalty of the night. The Sabres were able to kill off the minor penalty, despite the Canadiens having several shots and chances.

Buffalo outshot the Canadiens 13-9 in the opening twenty minutes, but Antti Niemi was able to stop all 13 Sabres' shots. At the other end, Carter Hutton stopped eight of the first nine Montreal shots on goal.

The Sabres first power play of the game came less than a minute into the middle stanza when Jordie Benn was whistled for a high sticking minor penalty. Buffalo was credited with three shots on goal while on the man advantage, but failed to score.

Buffalo's first goal came halfway through the game after a give-and-go play between Jason Pominville and Jeff Skinner in the offensive zone. The goal is Pominville's third of the season, and tied the game at 1-1. Skinner and Jake McCabe were given assists on the score.

Former Sabre Joel Armia was able to negate an icing call by winning the race to the puck, and was rewarded with his second goal of the season. Armia was able to slip the puck underneath Hutton along the goal post, and give Montreal a 2-1 lead.

Pominville took advantage of an Andrew Shaw penalty to re-tie the game at 2-2. The Canadiens challenged for goaltender interference after there was contact between Pominville and Niemi, however, the officials did not overturn the goal. Skinner and Casey Mittelstadt assisted on the score.

Domi scored his second goal of the game nearly seven minutes into the third period after beating one defender and splitting between two others. Jeff Perty and Niemi asissted on the goal that made it 3-2 Montreal.
