The Buffalo Sabres look to end their abysmal play in afternoon games, as they're 0-5-1 in the afternoon starts this season. They hosted the Washington Capitals on Monday, with plenty of children in attendance today for a Kids Day promotion. Robin Lehner was dealing with a lower body injury, leading to Chad Johnson starting in net, with Philip Grubauer getting the nod for Washington.

18:08 - Chad Johnson had to make a big save there on Lars Eller after he was given a one on one chance in the slot.

12:19 - Johan Larsson with the best chance so far for the Sabres after a good forecheck got Larsson a backhand opportunity that was stopped by Grubauer.

7:58 - Rasmus Ristolainen and Marco Scandella are playing Alex Ovechkin very physically in this game, but Ovi almost drew first blood on the scoreboard. Luckily for the Sabres, Chad Johnson was ready when Ovechkin jumped on a loose puck for a good scoring chance.

3:25 - Sam Reinhart is having a solid start to this game, the puck seems to be finding his stick a lot and he's been creating solid chances so far, even after being hauled to the ice by Brooks Orpik in the corner.

2:07 - Johan Larsson trips up Jakub Vrana right after the face off and Buffalo ends up on the penalty kill. The Sabres are 6-for-6 on the penalty kill in the past two games.

1:06 - The Capitals take a penalty while on the power play, with Brett Carlson getting an interference call and causing the teams to end the period 4-on-4. Buffalo will open the second period with 54 seconds on the power play.
