Flyers double up Sabres 6-3

March 7, 2017

Jack Eichel scored twice, but the Buffalo Sabres could not overcome a trio of Philadelphia Flyers goals in the second period. The Flyers defeated Buffalo 6-3 on Tuesday night at KeyBank Center.

First Period

17:19 - Pierre-Edouard Bellemare wasted no time trying to goad Nic Deslauriers into a fight. Finally, the Sabres forward obliged and got the better of his counterpart from Philadelphia. The crowd here at KeyBank Center jumped out of their seats pretty quickly and gave both players a cheer as they went to their respective penalty boxes. Now we'll see if either side gets a boost from the scrap.

15:15 - FLYERS GOAL. A shot from the point hits Matt Read on the way through the slot and Robin Lehner never had a chance. That is exactly the kind of break the Sabres cannot afford right now. Everything was under control until Radko Gudas let the shot go from the blue line. 1-0 PHI.

10:15 - This has been a fast moving period with very few whistles. Philly has had the better of the play, as evidenced by their lead in the shot category 7-3. Buffalo is getting hemmed in their own zone by the Flyers.

8:08 - The first penalty of the night goes to Josh Gorges, he is called for interference. It was only a matter of time with all of the clutching and grabbing that was going on. Someone was going to get called for some type of obstruction sooner rather than later.

5:59 - The Flyers fail to score, but it is not for a lack of chances. Twice on the PK Lehner looked back towards the net to see if the puck was past him. The first time he was able to squeeze the puck in his pads long enough to keep Wayne Simmonds from scoring. This is turning into a period to forget for the blue and gold.

4:35 - SABRES GOAL. Brayden Schenn was called for hooking, and just about ten seconds later Buffalo gets the equalizer. Evander Kane unloads a strong shot from the face-off dot to Steve Mason's left and the puck finds its way into the net. Sam Reinhart also set a very nice screen in front of the net to make it hard on the netminder. 1-1 tie.

Second Period

15:02 - FLYERS GOAL. Just line in the opening twenty minutes, the visitors get an early goal in the period to take the lead. This time Radko Gudas is able to walk in from the blue line and he beats Robin Lehner with the shot clean. Another rough start to the period for the blue and gold. 2-1 PHI.

12:49 - Well, we will see if history repeats itself. Bellemare heads to the box and Buffalo will have a chance to tie the game quickly after letting Philly score early.

12:42 - SABRES GOAL. It's "deja vu, all over again." Ryan O'Reilly wins the face-off and Jack Eichel absolutelty bombs the shot past Steve Mason on the set play. Buffalo evens the score up once again quickly on the man advantage. 2-2 tie.

9:17 - The Flyers are starting to make their mistakes this period, maybe Buffalo can take advantage. Philly is called for too many men on the ice, and the Sabres will head to the power play once again.

6:12 - FLYERS GOAL. Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good. That time Jordan Weal simply crashed to the net with Jake McCabe draped all over him. The puck gets thrown to the front of the net, and goes right off of the Flyer forward's skate. Not much of a review as there clearly was no kicking motion. Buffalo trails for a third time tonight. 3-2 PHI.

1:58 - FLYERS GOAL. The Sabres lose contain in front of the net and allow Claude Giroux to sit at the top of the crease and slams a rebound chance home. It was challenged by the Sabres for goaltender interference, but confirmed as a good goal. 4-2 PHI.

9:09 - There are some games where I wish there was a running clock, this is one of them. The stands are emtpying out and the Flyers know this game is in the bag. Despite a minor penalty, the visitors are firmly in control.
