Bills release Walter Powell

October 2, 2017

The Bills have released wide receiver Walter Powell, who was eligible to return to the team on Tuesday, and come off the reserve/suspended list at 4pm Monday. That was confirmed by Sean McDermott who was on with Schopp and the Bulldog.

The thought was Powell would be part of a group that would fill in for Jordan Matthews. Matthews will have surgery on his thumb, and is expected to miss at least a month. The Bills receiving core now includes Zay Jones, Andre Holmes, Kaelin Clay, and Brandon Tate. An addition via free agency, trade, or practice squad seems likely. Preseason fan favorite Brandon Reilly remains on the practice squad.

Powell was a 6th round pick of the Cardinals in 2014. He bounced around between the Cardinals, Jets, Raiders, and Bills. He made the Bills roster out of training camp last season. Powell had 14 catches for 142 yards in 2016. Prior to the 2017 season, Powell was suspended 4 games for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances.
