Bills come back to beat the Jets, 17-16

September 8, 2019

You can call it a comeback.

The Buffalo Bills erased a 16-point deficit to take a 17-16 win over the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey and start their season with a 1-0 record. Josh Allen and John Brown made the final connection in the fourth quarter in order to cap off the win against their division rivals.

Allen wound up going 24-of-37 for 254 yards, two total touchdowns and two interceptions, while Brown had seven catches for 123 yards and the game-winning score with three minutes remaining in regulation.

Rookie running back Devin Singletary led all rushers with 70 yards on just four carries.

It didn't come easy for the Bills, who dug themselves into a hole thanks to four first half turnovers, with two fumbles and two interceptions, all coming from Allen.

Buffalo's first drive of the game saw Allen and the Bills offense come out firing in the passing game, with Allen going 5-of-6 for 40 yards to start the game. With the offense rolling, Jets linebacker Jordan Jenkins would come in clean for a sack, forcing a fumble from Allen to halt Buffalo's progress.

While the Bills defense wound up forcing an immediate three-and-out, Allen's next pass deflected off of receiver Cole Beasley right into the hands of Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley, who returned the interception for a touchdown and gave the Jets a 6-0 lead.

However, New York would have an issue following the touchdown, as the extra point was missed by kicker Kaare Vedvik.

Buffalo would turn it over two more times in the opening half, including an interception on a deflected pass in a two-minute drill that gave the Jets an opportunity to extend their lead into halftime. However, Vedvik would miss the 45-yard attempt, leaving the score at just a 6-0 Jets lead at halftime.

The second half would not treat the Bills' offense that well to start, either.

Buffalo got pinned deep on their opening drive of the second half and it cost them points. Bills running back Frank Gore wound up failing to cross the plane and was tackled in the end zone by Jenkins for a safety, extending the Jets lead to 8-0.

New York then wound up marching the ball 60 yards following the free kick for a touchdown, capped off by a nine-yard pass from Jets quarterback Sam Darnold to running back Le'Veon Bell. Darnold and Bell would connect again on the two-point conversion in order to double up their lead on Buffalo to 16-0.

Despite the appearance of a potential blowout on the horizon, the Bills never stayed out of this contest.

The comeback started with a small victory, as Stephen Hauschka drilled a 43-yard field goal to cut into the lead and end the scoring in the third quarter with the Jets holding a 16-3 lead.

A pair of 80+ yard drives would be needed for Buffalo to get the win, starting with a healthy dose of Singletary to kick-start the offense. Singletary would garner up 55 all-purpose yards in Buffalo's 85-yard drive to pull within one score. Allen capped off the drive with a three-yard scramble to cut the Jets' lead to 16-10.

Singletary would contribute another 20 yards on the next drive to help Allen and Brown have the final word on the scoreboard. Allen would connect with Brown on a 38-yard touchdown pass and give the Bills their first lead of the game.

The Bills defense would be called upon to keep up, what was, a quietly great game, allowing the Jets to gain less than 200 total yards on the afternoon. The defense caused a turnover on downs to help Buffalo kill off more time, then stopped a lateral play to secure the win, 17-16.
