The Bills have hired Gill Byrd as their defensive backs coach and announced that Bobby Babich will serve as the assistant defensive backs coach.

Byrd is the father of former Bills and current Saints safety Jairus Byrd.  He will be entering his 13th season as an NFL coach. The 55 year old last coached cornerbacks for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2014-15.  He did not coach last season.  Prior to the Bucs, Byrd was with the Chicago Bears from 2006-2012 and began his coaching career with the St. Louis Rams in 2003.

Byrd played for a decade in the NFL, spending his entire career with the San Diego Chargers (1983-1992).  He was named All-Pro four times (1989-92) and is the Chargers all-time leader in interceptions with 42. Byrd was inducted into the Chargers Hall of Fame in 1998.

Babich will enter his sixth NFL season in 2017.  He spent 2016 as the secondary coach/defensive pass game coordinator for Florida International. From 2013-2015, Babich was the assistant secondary coach for the Cleveland Browns. Prior to joining Cleveland, Babich spent two seasons with the Carolina Panthers.
